Goodness is finally coming home.

Goodness in Rwanda, a documentary about touring a Canadian play
dealing with the nature of evil to the heartland of African genocide,
will receive its official Canadian premiere at the Carlton Cinema on
Monday.

Remembering the terror in Rwanda, 20 years after the human slaughter

Michael Redhill's play Goodness was first presented in Toronto in 2005
by Volcano Theatre, directed by Ross Manson. It was revived in 2009
and invited to the Festival Arts Azimut in Rwanda.

Goodness is better second time round

Gord Rand and Tara Hughes, two members of the 10-person Canadian cast,
were so struck by the idea of presenting a play about genocide in the
country that had felt its horror most strongly in the past few decades
that they recorded their journey.

Enlisting the help of veteran director of photography John Westheuser
(Shake Hands With the Devil), the documented their journey, in all of
its difficulty and complexity.

Moving Canadian play comes 'home' to Rwanda

"When we premiered in Toronto, the audience talked about Western guilt
in the face of atrocity, the role of the artist in society," says
actor and co-director Rand. "When we took the film to (Africa), there
was heated discussion around cultural appropriation. Who has the right
to tell the stories of others?

"Wherever we go with the film, there is a powerful reaction to the
sheer fact that these Western artists dared to try to connect to
Rwandans on a subject they clearly owned through experience. Even
though the play is not about Rwanda specifically, it is about
genocide."

So far, the film has won the Audience Choice Award at Reelworld 2013,
been an official selection at the Edmonton International Film Festival
2013 and won Best Documentary at the 2014 Thin Line Film Festival in
Denton, Texas.

"This April marks the 20th anniversary of the Rwandan genocide," says
Rand. "We are hoping to build awareness and continue the conversation
in Toronto."

Goodness in Rwanda is at the Carlton Cinema, 20 Carlton St., on
Monday, April 21 at 6:15, 8 and 9:45 p.m. Tickets for the screenings
are available at the Carlton box office and a panel discussion will
follow each screening.
