Angolan, Tanzanian Presidents Discuss Situation In Great Lakes Region

Bernama - Malaysian National News Agency 07:59 12-May-14

LUANDA, May 12 (BERNAMA-NNN-ANGOP) -- Angolan President Jose Eduardo
dos Santos has held talks here with his visiting Tanzanian
counterpart, President Jakaya Kikwete, on bilateral co-operation and
the situation in the African Great Lakes Region.

In the region, conflict continues in the eastern Democratic Republic
of Congo (DRC), the Central African Republic (CAR) and between Sudan
and South Sudan, and President Jose Eduardo dos Santos has been
engaged in looking for solutions to these conflicts.

The Angolan leader in January this year took over for a two-year term
the presidency of the International Conference on the Great Lakes
Region (ICGLR), succeeding Uganda, which had chaired the organisation
since 2011.

The ICGLR was set up against the backdrop of the war in the DRC from
2002 to 2006, with the assistance of the African Union (AU), the
United Nations and donor countries to implement the Pact on Security,
Stability and Development (PACT), signed in December 2006 by eleven
heads of states from Angola, Burundi, CAR, DRC, Kenya, Rwanda,
Republic of Congo, Sudan, Uganda, Tanzania and Zambia.

The Tanzanian President arrived here Saturday for an overnight visit
and left for home on Sunday.
